Interview with Aurelio Orozco Molina

How did you become a nature and permaculture guide?

I became a guide after working in conventional agriculture and realizing that it didn’t generate good income. I always wanted to work in tourism, so I became a tour guide. I first learned about permaculture in 2012 while working at Rancho Margot, where I stayed for about nine years.

What motivated you to learn about nature?

I always grew up surrounded by nature, but not fully knowing it motivated me to learn a little bit of everything. Each experience has helped me grow and expand my understanding of the natural world.

How do your values and life philosophy influence the way you guide your tours?

I have a wonderful mother who instilled strong family values in me. If I had to define my life philosophy, I’d say it’s to be happy. That’s why, on every tour, I try to enjoy the moment and share that happiness with people. In a way, that is also permaculture.

Has anyone influenced your path in this profession?

Yes, while working at Rancho Margot, I met someone who became my mentor: Ulises Corrales, known as Moyo. He’s an ecologist who changed the way I see nature and the world.

How do you introduce permaculture in your tours without overwhelming visitors?

The term “permaculture” is relatively new, and some people aren’t familiar with it. That’s why, instead of confusing them with theory, I prefer to show practical examples of its principles. The natural environment is the best tool to help visitors connect and understand it intuitively.

What is the biggest challenge you face as a guide?

Misinformation. If visitors had more prior knowledge, they could have more transformative and enriching experiences. My challenge is to balance education with excitement.

What lessons have been most important in your career?

Every day brings a new lesson. The most valuable thing is being able to put into practice what I’ve learned over time and see it reflected in my daily work.

How do you relate nature guiding to permaculture education?

Everything is connected. Even on a birdwatching tour, I can talk about permaculture because ecological interactions are always present.

How do you apply permaculture in your daily life?

I have a small property that I call “my farm,” where I have a little bit of everything. Every day, I try to improve it by applying permaculture principles on a small scale.

How has your understanding of permaculture evolved over the years?

Since I was 15, I have taken organic farming courses. My father plants according to the lunar cycle, as he learned from his father. Every day, I continue to evolve in my understanding and application of permaculture.

What are your thoughts on the future of ecotourism and permaculture?

They are closely related. Permaculture education should focus on nature conservation within ecotourism.

Has a visitor ever asked a question that made you see your work from a new perspective?

Yes, many times visitors ask questions that, when analyzed, contain their own answers. Every day is an opportunity to learn something new because each visitor is different and brings a unique perspective.
